Welcome to the behind-the-scenes look at the process of creating captivating visual merchandising displays. If you’ve ever walked past a storefront that effortlessly caught your eye and drew you in, chances are you were admiring a visual display that combined art with strategic planning. In this blog post I will display how I combined my creativity into creating a visual narrative.

Planning and Layout Design: Where Creativity Takes Shape

The journey of creating a visual display begins with planning and layout design. You begin with a blank canvas that requires colors, textures and different shapes to persuade customers to look at each element. There are a few factors to consider when beginning a visual like the store layout, target audience and the season to create a cohesive display.

Selection of Props and Decor: Curating the Visual Harmony

Colorful Winter Wonderland

Colorful Winter Wonderland

In visual merchandising, props and decor play a pivotal role in bringing a display to life. Every element, from mannequins and signage to lighting and foliage, is selected to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal and convey the brand's message. All of these aspects allow consumers to vision the merchandise in their own lifestyle whether it is styling the accessories and clothing or bringing pieces into their home. For the merchandised video above, I wanted to create a winter wonderland that was a little different than the normal green and red for Christmas. The different colored trees added not only visual appeal but texture to the display. To enhance the winter wonderland theme, I added Poly-Fill with iridescent sparkles to create a shine like snowfall. For the final touches, I placed a ski-lift on the higher table with Santa Skiers skiing "down the mountain" to complete the theme.

Christmas Eve/ New Years Eve Soft Glam

I merchandised this table to incorporate both largely celebrated holidays: Christmas and New Years Eve. I wanted to add a few different pops of color, texture and height to persuade customers attention to the table. I find that it adds cohesiveness when texture is brought into the table in a couple of areas. The sparkle in the green dress ties into the tan sequin skirt on the table and even into the buttons on the black blazer. The black velvet skirts incorporates the velvet purses hanging above. The fuzzy warmth of the green sweater ties into the pink cozy sweater and even into the foiled oversized pants by creating a glam comfortable outfit for the holidays. The pop of color in the purple purse and Christmas trees draws the customers eyes into the table by placing an unexpected color into the theme. It is the balance between creativity and functionality in this visual that makes it work by having a purpose for each product to tell a cohesive story.

Falling for Fall

This was a section I merchandised in women's fashion as fall was approaching. The mannequin added height to the display while also displaying a monochrome forward fashion outfit for the fall and winter months. I styled her with dainty necklaces and bracelets to accessorize the outfit. Many of our customers were searching for easy stylish outfits that could be worn many different ways. I strategically placed each item on the display by showing the ease of styling everything together or separately. For example, the white bottoms with the knit striped sweater and boots create an outfit and also the maroon silk pants with the chunky striped sweater.

A few more merchandised by me:

Visual merchandising tells stories to the customers and are a reflection of a brand's identity. It is a great way for customers to connect to the brand and even to that certain location.
